Christmas Is Coming - December 2015


We've got a busy two weeks ahead of us with Christmas holidays coming up next week.

The last day of of classes before the break is Friday December 18 and it is a REGULAR school day. All students are expected to be here and engaged in their classes.

This time of year also means that many assignments, CPT, and tests are occurring, and that all students should be reviewing for Exams in January (January 11-29).

For us in the ELL Department, we will host our Annual Christmas Potluck Lunch on Thursday December 17 during A and C lunch, All students should bring in a food or money contribution so we can enjoy a successful event.

Come to our FMM Open House


You are invited to attend our FMM Open House on Wednesday November 4th.

You will have an opportunity to tour the school and get a very good sense of the vibrant school culture and student life.

In addition to that, you will get to visit classrooms and see some of the state-of-the-art technology that we have in place in the school including our new “collaborative learning commons.”

During our General Information session you will learn about our school vision and mission statement and what type of student we are dedicated to producing at FMM.

Semester 1, Week 1-4: Welcome Back! Let's have a great 2015-2016

Wow! What a busy start to the school year.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but being busy in our ELL Department is a good thing.

For the past few weeks, our ELL population continuously grew, with new students coming in on a daily basis. We are finally slowing down, so I now have the opportunity to make an official blog welcome to all of our new students their families.

Semester 2, Week 18 & 19 - EXAMS!

If you haven't done so already, it is time to get serious.



Many in-class exams start this week, and by next week you should be in full exam mode since the Formal Exam Schedule begins on Wednesday June 17.

All students wishing to write their formal exams in Room 327, need to make your requests to Mr Hospedales by Monday..................TODAY!

Semester 2, Week 17 - OSAID Week, Student Appreciation Day & Prom



This is OSAID Week at FMM so be on the lookout for the many activities that at the OSAID group will be putting on. Including an assembly on Monday, presentations and displays in the foyer, Candlelight Vigil visits, and the Car Accident display on Thursday.

Wednesday is our annual Student Appreciation Day. We know you will have lots of fun that day.

Prom is on Friday at the Brighton Convention Centre, we wish all attending a safe and enjoyable time.

Semester 2, Week 16 - Science Week & Our Celebration of Culture

It's Science Week at FMM. Students are invited to take part in the variety of activities offered this week by the Science Department.


Our big event this week is the MIC/SEPYR Celebration of Culture. During A & C Lunch on Thursday May 28. Make sure to attend.


May 28th also happens to be our Closing Liturgy. A busy day to be sure.

The Athletic Banquet takes place this Friday May 29th. Congratulations to all of our athletes and award winners.

Semester 2, Week 14 - Casseroles, Surveys, Service and the Arts

Welcome to another week at FMM. No time to waste with the announcements so here goes:

1. If you are making Casseroles, please have them in to Chaplaincy by Tuesday morning at 9 am.

2. The school climate surveys are taking place this week. Make sure to fill them out honestly and completely.

3. Thursday is the Grade 9 Day of Service @ Austin Drive Park. All students and teachers will be planting trees and attending to the vegetation in that area.

4. ARTS - Tuesday is Arts Night in the Cafeteria (6:30-9pm), and the Arts Banquet will be held at Crystal Fountain on Thursday night.

5. Make sure to submit your Student Appreciation Day forms to Student Government in the Cafeteria.
6. Remember that Monday May 18th is Victoria Day. Classes resume on Tuesday May 19th.

Semester 2, Week 13 - Catholic Education Week, Retreat, Karaoke & PA Day

It's Catholic Education Week - check out this YCDSB pdf file for the list of activities throughout the board.

On Tuesday, selected ELL Students will attend a Retreat at Loretto Maryholme. These students are reminded to be ready and waiting for the bus pick-up @ 7:30am.

On Thursday, the school hosts Karaoke Night in the Cafeteria from 6:30 - 11pm. Come and show off your singing chops.

Friday is a PA Day. There are no classes.

Semester 2, Week 12 - Beyond the Label Week

It was a pleasure meeting all the parents and guardians that attended the Parent/Teacher Interviews last week. You are always invited to contact us at other times during the year as well.

All students are asked to support the Co-op students and their Beyond the Label initiative. Visit them in the cafeteria during all lunches. Thanks go out to Logini of SEPYR for bringing in ASYR to do a gaming addiction workshop last Thurday. All who attended were engaged in a informative presentation.


The FMM Concert band is hosting the Sprint Concert at the Markham Theatre on Friday @ 7pm. Get your tickets today.

Next week, selected ELL students will attend a Retreat to connect with other ELL students in the YCDSB. Stay tuned for pictures.

Semester 2, Week 10 - Seussical & The Inside Ride

We had an incredible Inside Ride yesterday, check out some pictures.








Yes, Mr. Hospedales participated in the Inside Ride and did his part to raise money for worthy childhood cancer charities whose programs support children with cancer and their families. The students and staff of FMM raised over $16 000! We have an amazing school!
Next on the agenda is Seussical The Musical. Tickets are sold out for Friday so get your tickets now for Thursday April 16 - opening night!

Semester 2, Week 9 - Happy Easter!

We hope you had a Happy Easter with your friends and family.


Congratulations go out to the members of our Jr and Sr Badminton team. Quite a few advanced to the next round and we are hosting the Sr Tourney here on Wednesday. The Jr's compete at Bur Oak on Thursday.

We will celebrate and Easter Liturgy in Friday.

Semester 2, Week 8 - Holy Week


It is Holy Week.

It started on Palm Sunday and continues this week with major events such as Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Monday.

Please be reminded that there are no classes on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Classes resume on Tuesday April 7th.

On that same day, parents of YCDSB students are invited to this event.

It will be a busy few weeks (thanks to the two shortened 4 day weeks in a row), before you know it, May will be here. Mid-term report cards are coming soon so there is no time to relax.

Semester 2, Week 7 - Welcome to Spring! OSSLT is this Thursday!


Welcome back from the March Break!

It might not seem like it today with it being so cold, but it is officially spring. So hopefully, we will experience warmer weather an a more regular basis.

The big event this week is the OSSLT on Thursday March 26.

The ELL OSSLT Prep classes continue today and Wednesday from 2:40 to 3:30 pm.

There is a special schedule for that day (a letter was sent home).

All ELL students writing the test should be at 8:15 am and report to room 327.

The school day begins at 12 noon for all other students.

Semester 2, Week 6, 20015 - French Week

Bonjour! It is French week here at McGivney.
The Moderns Department will feature a variety of activities throughout the week.

The afterschool OSSLT Prep sessions continue this week on Monday and Wednesday from 2:40 - 3:40 pm. All ELL students writing the test on March 26th should attend all sessions or see Mr Hospedales to get additional help.

Other major events this week:

Inside Ride Assembly - Tuesday

PA Day on Friday March 13 --- No Classes!!! March Break Begins (March 13-March 22).

Classes resume on Monday March 23!

Semester 2, Week 5, 2015 - OSSLT Prep Continues & FEM Week

The OSSLT Prep classes continue every Monday and Wednesday from 2:40 - 3:30 pm in Room 327.

It's FEM Week at McGivney with lots of activities to raise awareness of human rights for all people using the backdrop of injustice against women and children around the world.

Part of that is Purple Shirt day on Wednesday.



We will also hold our Memorial Liturgy on Thursday.

Semester 2, Week 4, 2015 - Course Selection & the ELL OSSLT Prep Classes Begin This Week

For those designated to write the OSSLT on Thursday March 26, the ELL OSSLT Preparation classes begin today. Here are the details for all the classes:

Monday February 23 --- Wednesday February 25
Monday March 2 --- Wednesday March 4
Monday March 9 --- Wednesday March 11
Monday March 23 --- Wednesday March 25 

* All sessions start after school at 2:40 pm and conclude at 3:30 pm.

Attending these classes is essential to experiencing success on the OSSLT. All students should attend.

All students are reminded to choose their courses and submit the student fee to secure your spot for next year. Please make sure you meet those deadlines this week.

Semester 2, Week 3 - Ash Wednesday & The Youth Employment Workshop

We hope you had a great Family Day yesterday despite all the cold weather.

There are a number of important activities this week including Ash Wednesday, Arts Awareness Day on Friday, and also on Friday the Youth Employment Workshop hosted by us here in Room 327. See the details below:


Our OSSLT preparation classes begin next week after school. All details were sent home in a letter to all ELL students writing the test or deferred to next year. All parents/guardians must read the letter, sign the acknowledgement form, and return it to school as soon as possible.

Semester 2, Week 2, 2015 - Family Day, Valentine's Day & The OSSLT

Things are gradually picking up, with more activities taking place each week.

In the ELL Department, we are getting prepared for the OSSLT, which will be written on Thursday March 26. Students will receive letters this week with information regarding writing this year, deferrals, and extra preparation classes.

Remember that Monday February 16 is Family Day. So there are no classes.

Welcome back! Semester 2 starts today.

If you have any scheduling/timetable issues, please see Mr Hospedales in Room 327.

Looking ahead, the OSSLT will be written on Thursday March 26. Our ELL Department will have extra preparation classes for students writing the Test and for those Deferred to next year. Letters will be send home within the next few weeks.

Semester 1, Week 18 - Exams! Are You Ready?

The semester is almost over so that means it is time to get serious - if you haven't been serious all year.

For some, exams start later this week, but most will begin writing exams next week.

All students in ESL Courses will write exams  from Monday January 19 to Thursday January 22.

All exams in the Formal Schedule begin on Friday January 23.

This coming Thursday January 15, we will host an Employment Workshop during lunch A in Room 327.



Please join us to get tips and help with acquiring a job you are likely searching for or will be soon.

Lastly, Grade 9 Math students will be writing the EQAO Math Test this week on January 13 and 15.

Exams will be here soon so there is no time to waste. Make sure to complete all your assignments for your classes and start studying for your exams.
